Build the bus!

SPCA is working with a Veterinary mobile unit specialist to design our SPCA Maui state of the art unit that will be able to reach every area of Maui. Our island is unique and beautiful with it’s rural character but this also presents the ideal environment for animal overpopulation !!

Based on the US Census definition of a rural area as having a population density of between 1 and 999 people per square mile, the island of Maui is entirely rural, with an average population density of 200 people per square mile. Most of Maui is comprised of sugarcane fields, cattle ranches, mountains and forests. Nearly 2/3rds of our total human and pet populations are scattered throughout these wide open spaces.

This rural nature of Maui presents limited access to veterinary services, therefore many island pets do not receive basic veterinary care. Our rural areas also tend to be populated with lower income families who are less likely to be exposed to educational materials presenting the benefits of pet sterilization. Nine percent of Maui’s population fall below the national poverty level and struggle to make ends meet. Maui is a choice environment for pet overpopulation and homelessness.

Did you know that one female cat and its offspring can produce up to 420,000 kittens in just seven years? One female dog and her pups can produce up to 67,000 more dogs over a six year span.

In working with our County animal control officers who receive calls about strays, homeless and abandoned litters of kittens and puppies, we will be able to target, reach and service these communities where most of the overpopulation is generated. Our Bus will reach any area from Kohakuloa to Hana.

Please help us to BUILD the BUS and together we can create a “no more homeless pets” Maui island
